Maria Walker Tech Styles

The articulation of the unwritten narratives of ordinary working class people has underpinned Maria Walker's textile-based practice for a number of years, so she was delighted by her discovery of an Indenture which was drawn up in 1795 between the apprentice Ann Bates and Samuel Greg in the Quarry Bank Mill archives. Her textile installation relies on the neutrality of the actual text from the Indenture to invite the viewer to 'fill in the gaps' about the rest of Ann Bates' life. The inclusion of the typewriter, which was not invented until 60 year after this Apprentice Indenture was written, alludes to the ever-changing technologies at the Mill.

Tech Styles Exhibition

 It is only a couple of weeks now until Textile 21's 'Techstyles' exhibition opens at Quarry Bank Mill Styal near Manchester.

Opening Times : 21st September to 3rd November 2013 open every day 11.00 until 17.00.

Closed on the 4th and 5th November 2013.

From the 6th November until the 24th November winter opening times apply and the Mill is closed on Mondays and Tuesday. Opening times 

for Wednesday to Sunday  0nly - 11.00 to 15.30

National Trust admission charges apply and include entry to the whole site.

Handed Down, Handing On.... April 2013

Our next exhibition will be in April 2013 at Jobling Gower in Macclesfield which is a lovely exhibition space. For this exhibition we will be exploring things which have been handed down to us and also those that we want to hand on to our children.

Maria Walker's Inspiration for this exhibition is her family holidays in Blackpool and her postcard collection.

Textile artist, Maria Walker is planning on basing her work on her postcard collection, which was partly handed down to her but is also something she has added to over time. She particularly likes her collection of old comic postcards as they remind her of family holidays in Blackpool where her Grandma ran a boarding house. She was brought up in a working class family in Sheffield and is proud of her working class roots so she is  hoping to hand  on this pride to her children along with her wicked sense of humour.
